STUDENT CONTRACT IN SCIENCE COURSES

STUDENT: ___________________________ TEACHER: ___________________ DATE: ____________

SUBJECT CLASS: ______________________  PERIOD: ______

  1. Attendance/Lateness:  I am required to come to class every school day. Only absence due to illness or other extreme conditions will be explained with a medical/parental note. Cutting or excessive lateness will merit serious consequences. If I am absent or late, I am expected to make up the work which was missed.  I understand that missing classwork through lateness and/or absence will have a negative impact upon my classwork grade which can result in a failing grade for the course.

  1. Classwork:  I am required to be prepared for every class.  This includes a loose-leaf binder, and a pen/pencil.  Positive, active participation in class is expected.  I further understand that I must fully contribute toward all Group Activities. I am to copy and take notes in class when possible.  I understand that negative behavior in class results in an atmosphere which is not conducive to learning and therefore is unacceptable.  I understand that poor classwork will have a negative impact upon my classwork grade and notebook grade which can result in a failing grade for the course.

Parent/Guardian should check their child’s notebook everyday.  Notebooks will be checked.

  1. Homework:  I understand that homework will be assigned on a daily basis, and that I am expected to do the homework each night.  If I cannot understand the homework, I will write out the question in my notebook or loose-leaf binder.  If I am absent from class, it is my responsibility to get the work I missed.  I understand that missing and/or poor homework will have a negative impact upon my homework grade which can result in a failing grade for the course.

  1. Grading:  I understand that my grade will be based upon the following:

Assessments (exams, quiz, and projects/portfolios)  60 %

Labs    (Lab is a cumulative grade)                          15 %

Classwork-Participation (attendance/lateness/cutting/notebook)               15 %

Homework                                                                                          10%

*MARKING PERIOD GRADES STAND ALONE. THE FINAL GRADE IS A CUMMULATIVE GRADE.

  1. Classroom/Lab Environment:  I will respect the property and work of other students, as well as school property.  I will keep the classroom, science lab, computers clean and graffiti- free.  I will abide by the rules and regulations of the science labs.  I UNDERSTAND THAT ANY WILLFUL DESTRUCTION OF EQUIPMENT OR FURNITURE BY ME WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM SCHOOL AND THAT I WILL ALSO BE SUBJECT TO ARREST FOR VANDALISM.

  1. Getting Help:  I understand that I should contact another student in the class if I am absent so that I can get the notes and assignments.  I understand that it is my responsibility to get help in the course if I need it.  I understand that tutoring will be available at the end of the school day through the JCC program.

  1. Taking the Regents examination is not an OPTION: It is a REQUIREMENT. A student who absents himself or herself from a Regents exam without a valid excuse (certified medical emergency, documented death in the family, or court appearance) will incur a penalty. The penalty for unauthorized absence from the Regents examination is a reduction in the final course grade by a minimum of 5 points and a maximum of 10 points.  The penalty may not be automatic failure.  However, if the application of the point penalty described above results in a student’s failure, such failure is permissible.

  1. Lab is not an OPTION: It is a REQUIREMENT.  All students in Regents science courses must attend and participate in required laboratory experiences during their scheduled laboratory periods.  The Regents requirement to sit for the respective Regents Examination is clearly stated as being a minimum of 1200 minutes of laboratory experience per year for each course (32 lab reports).  In addition, a satisfactory laboratory report must also be presented by the student for each laboratory experience. No marking period stands alone for lab totals. Each lab total builds on the previous one.  If these minimum requirements are not met-you will not be in compliance with the NYS requirement and be subjected to being barred from taking the Regents Examination in the course.
